Week 4 Guide
Week 4
Lay down: non-essential spending
Pick up: donate to justice seeking non-profits
It’s amazing how much money we all spend on non-essentials every week. This week, let’s buy only what we need (groceries, bills, etc.) and use the extra money we have to support non-profits who are caring for the vulnerable both locally and around the world. If you need some help identifying reputable non-profits, refer to the provided guide.
Lent 2021 Fast – Week 4 – Non-Essential Spending
It’s amazing how much money we all spend on non-essentials every week. This week, let’s buy only what we need (groceries, bills, etc.) and use the extra money we have to support non-profits who are caring for the vulnerable both locally and around the world. If you need some help identifying reputable non-profits, here are some good organizations:
Trellis – A local non-profit that seeks to unite the Church in Costa Mesa around prayer, neighboring, homelessness, and education. For more info: www.wearetrellis.com
Project Hope Alliance – A local organization with a mission of “ending the cycle of homelessness one child at a time.” For more info: www.projecthopealliance.org
Orange County Rescue Mission – A local outreach that provides “guidance, counseling, education, job training, shelter, food, clothing, healthcare, and independent living communities” to people experiencing homelessness. For more info: www.rescuemission.org
Harvest India – “an Indian-based NGO [non-government organization] that seeks to serve the Dalit people of India, through meeting real, tangible needs.” For more info: www.harvestindia.org
The Graceful Warrior Project – A globally-focused non-profit (run by Canopy’s own Kelly Bartlett) that helps “women through indigenous leadership to heal, find strength and be empowered through God’s grace.” For more info: www.thegracefulwarriorproject.com
Preemptive Love – An organization that works across the world to “unmake the effects of violence and create the more beautiful world our hearts know is possible.” For more info: www.preemptivelove.org
For Families with kids
Parents, as you begin to cut out “non-essential spending” include your children in the conversation and choices. Help them understand the difference between essential and non-essential spending and allow them to choose something they might be able to do without this week. Then, introduce them to some of the organizations listed above. Encourage them to help you choose where they would like their money to go. Discuss why that organization stands out to them. Continue to share reports and inspiration from the organization you chose beyond this week.
